About the Neurosciences Institute

Stony Brook University's Neurosciences Institute is comprised of multi-disciplinary teams of clinical and research professionals. It provides comprehensive neurological, neurosurgical, and psychiatric care for a wide range of disorders affecting the brain, spine, nerves, or muscle; and seeks to advance current standards of care though basic, translational, and clinical research. The Institute is home to nationally and internationally recognized leaders in their fields, and its Clinical Centers give these experts access to state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced imaging and minimally invasive surgical platforms. We seek to provide our patients with compassionate, patient- and family-centered care, combining cost-effectiveness with excellent outcomes throughout the care continuum. We emphasize effective and open communication with our patients and referring physicians. We fully understand the importance of listening carefully to patient concerns, and ensuring that our patients always have a full understanding of their condition and care plan.

We are the only academic and Level 1 trauma center in New York's Suffolk County, home to 1.5 million people. Our Cerebrovascular and Stroke Center has been accredited by the Department of Health and The Joint Commission, and is recognized by the American Heart Association with a Gold Plus quality achievement award. All our clinicians are on the faculty at Stony Brook University, and thus have the resources to participate in cutting-edge clinical trials. The Institute's deep commitment to research is central to our ability to offer our patients the latest in diagnostic tests and treatments. Our physicians are supported by excellent physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, therapists, psychologists and social workers, as well as administrative support staff who are charged with guiding our patients through their care experience. The Neurosciences Institute partners closely with other specialized services at Stony Brook such as neuroradiology, neuropathology, neuro-ophthalmology, and chronic pain management.
