The ONLY Hospital in NY to be named one of America’s 100 Best for Stroke Care eight years in a row

America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke CareStony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has achieved national recognition by being named by Healthgrades® as one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care and as the ONLY hospital in New York State to earn this recognition eight years in a row (2016-2023).

In addition, Healthgrades 2023 rankings named SBUH as the #2 hospital in NY for both Neurosciences and Stroke Care for 2023 — and one of only two hospitals on Long Island*  in the top five.

This, according to new research released by Healthgrades, a leading online source for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals, helping millions of consumers each month find and schedule appointments with their healthcare professional of choice.

“This accomplishment reflects Stony Brook University Hospital’s consistently outstanding clinical outcomes in stroke care and our unwavering dedication to our patients,” said Hal Paz, MD, MS, Chief Executive Officer, Stony Brook University Medicine and Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, Stony Brook University.

“I’m delighted that for the eighth year in a row, our hospital’s Cerebrovascular and Comprehensive Stroke Center continues to provide a level of stroke care few hospitals anywhere can match. From our mobile stroke units that provide stroke care on the scene before arriving at the hospital to our advanced diagnostic and neuro-interventional treatment options and groundbreaking clinical trials not available anywhere else in the region, there is no better place to be for stroke care.”

Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 of the most common conditions and procedures at nearly 4,500 hospitals across the country to identify the top-performing hospitals for specialty care. This year’s analysis revealed significant variation in patient outcomes between America’s Best hospitals for specialty care and hospitals that did not receive a distinction.

Patients treated at hospitals receiving the America's 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care Award have, on average, a 40.2% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award*.
