Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation (PES) Program
Stony Brook Medicine now offers Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation (PES), becoming the first program in New York State to provide this innovative treatment.
- PES provides mild electrical stimulation to the pharynx that promotes the brain’s natural ability to reorganize and recover function.
- Supported by 2026 AHA/ASA National Stroke Guidelines as a beneficial treatment for reducing dysphagia severity and aspiration risk in patients recovering from stroke.
The program’s multidisciplinary team includes speech-language pathologists, physicians, and advanced practice providers with expertise in neurologic recovery; nurses and registered dieticians.
- Treatment is individualized, using evidence-based, best practice swallowing rehabilitation for optimal outcomes to help enhance each patient's recovery potential.
- Use of PES can improve swallowing safety and ease, reduce complications associated with dysphagia, and enhance quality of life.
