Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Services

The term “movement disorder” refers to a brain disorder that causes abnormal, reduced or slow movements. It can cause your limbs to become stiff and slow or shake, or cause your muscles to contract when you don’t want them to. Our specialists are skilled and knowledgeable in assessing and treating a wide range of movement disorders.

The first step is to undergo an evaluation by one of our movement disorders neurologists who is trained to evaluate these complex movement disorders. At Stony Brook, when we meet an individual for an initial evaluation, we ask them to perform different tasks like writing, walking across the room, pouring water, drinking water and drawing spirals. From these seemingly simple tasks, we are able to carefully observe nuances in their movements and make a diagnosis.

We diagnose and treat a range of movement disorders and offer resources to help enhance your quality of life.
