Operating in an ethically and culturally sensitive manner, the Mind-Body Clinical Research Center fosters awareness, growth and resiliency building during each step of the healing process.

Our team works closely with primary care and other healthcare providers to deliver integrative care. Our clinical services are rooted in scientific research and include best practices treatment approaches for healing both the mind and body.

Mind-Body Clinical Research Center Services

Our clinical services include individual treatment and group-based treatment programs.

Our individual treatment approaches include:

• Cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) for mood and anxiety disorders
• Cognitive behavioral and acceptance and commitment therapy for psychosis (CBTp/ACTp)
• Specialized treatments for PTSD (Cognitive processing therapy and prolonged exposure)Mindfulness and relaxation training
• Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
• Behavioral medicine (e.g., pain management, medication adherence, coping will illnesses)
• Comprehensive smoking cessation

Our group-based programs are our frontline form of treatment. We highly encourage patients to give our group-based programs a try; these programs provide helpful skills and are similar to workshops.

Our current group-based programs include:

Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) Program

Developed at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, SMART is a comprehensive mind-body group focused on teaching coping skills aimed at improving stress regulation, promoting relaxation, and increasing connectedness to self and others. SMART will help you achieve these goals by decreasing the physical, emotional, mental and behavioral effects of stress. SMART may be helpful for patients with stress, anxiety and mood problems and individuals with co-occurring health concerns (meaning mental health issues + a physical health issue), such as obesity, pain, cancer, diabetes, etc. (13 sessions)

Stand UP to Anxiety

Stand UP to Anxiety is designed for adults who are having difficulty managing, understanding and approaching their emotions, especially managing anxiety. The goal of this program is to help individuals understand their emotional experiences, particularly anxiety, address avoidance of emotions and gain insight about behaviors driven by emotions.  

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Program

This program is most commonly used to treat borderline personality disorder, chronic suicidal thoughts and self-injurious behaviors. It is also effective for individuals with emotion regulation difficulties and depression. The “dialectical” piece focuses on the ability to take different viewpoints and create balance between one’s changing outlook and accepting situations as they are. The “behavioral” piece focuses on the ability to look at and understand behavior choices and learn new coping skills. Participating in our DBT program generally involves taking part in a skills group, individual therapy and phone coaching. Most of our skills groups are 14 to 16 weeks with the opportunity to re-enroll to continue building skills mastery.  Learn More.

Weight Management Program

This program focuses on learning to set realistic individualized weight management goals. Participants will also learn how to identify and cope with emotional eating habits to facilitate lasting weight loss in a supportive and interactive group format (13 weeks).

Cognitive Behavior Therapy/Acceptance Commitment Therapy for Psychosis (CBT/ACT-P)

CBT/ACT-P teaches you how to develop effective coping strategies to better manage symptoms related to psychosis. This 16-week program aims to improve mindfulness, foster acceptance and promote resilience in those dealing with the symptoms of psychosis. The program is ideally suited for individuals within five years of first experiencing psychotic symptoms.

Parents of Transgender & Gender Diverse Children

The goals of this FREE group are to offer educational material and support for parents, caregivers, and other adult family members of transgender, non-binary and/or otherwise gender-diverse children. The group will offer space for free-form discussions where members can listen to each other and receive peer support. Individuals will earn more about the following topics: navigating the physical, mental and social complexities of gender diversity, especially as it relates to the family; supporting, empathizing and being present with your child through the social challenges around gender; and exploring various gender affirming services, what they are, and how to access them.

Fee-for-Service Sliding Scale Clinic

Being part of an academic medical center, we are committed to training and research. The Mind Body Clinical Research Center is part of the Stony Brook University Consortium Training Programs in Psychology, which includes a doctoral internship program accredited by the American Psychological Association; a pre-doctoral externship program; and a post-doctoral fellowship program. Our trainees come from top Universities throughout the country and are closely supervised to provide high quality, evidenced-based care. Our interns and externs provide individual and group-based therapy as part of our low fee-for-service clinic. Our fees are based on a sliding scale according to income and are considerably lower than practitioners in the community. Fees range from $20 to $125.
