Dr. Rebecca Spiegel, Recipient of AMWA INSPIRE Award

Rebecca Spiegel, MD, MA, FAES, Associate Professor of Neurology at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, and Director of the Stony Brook Level 4 Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, was honored with the 2022 INSPIRE Award from the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA).

The Leadership Council of the AMWA established the INSPIRE Award in 2021, to recognize women physicians who personally and/or professionally provide inspiration to other physicians and students through expert and compassionate patient-oriented medical care, or through mentorship, research and academic accomplishment, or service to the community.

“I’m delighted that AMWA has recognized Dr. Spiegel with the INSPIRE Award. We are proud of the important work that Dr. Spiegel and her team at our Level 4 Comprehensive Epilepsy Center do to improve the lives of our patients and their families, many of whom come to us seeking treatment for the most challenging epilepsy and seizure conditions,” said Hal Paz, MD, MS, Chief Executive Officer, Stony Brook University Medicine and Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, Stony Brook University.

Dr. Spiegel was one of 57 accomplished women physicians from around the country this year to be selected for this honor. Each AMWA recipient exemplifies the highest values in vision, integrity, service and collaboration in medicine. The honorees are MDs or DOs representing a range of specialties from neurology to psychology to general practice. They work in a variety of settings from large academic centers and highly specialized centers of excellence to smaller community care centers dedicated to underserved populations.

Dr. Spiegel received her MD from University of Chicago and completed her residency in Neurology and her fellowship in Neurophysiology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
