A total of 600 EPIC Long Island supporters, including Stony Brook Medicine epileptologists, resident physicians, as well as family and friends of individuals being treated for epilepsy at Stony Brook Medicine joined EPIC Long Island’s Walk for Epilepsy 2016 on Oct. 15 at Eisenhower Park.
EPIC, which stands for Extraordinary People in Care, is a non-profit, Long Island-based epilepsy-focused organization serving hundreds of families for six decades. Stony Brook Epilepsy Center was one of several sponsors of this year’s annual event, which raised $65,000. All of the proceeds raised will help to benefit the agency’s programs and services that support children and adults with epilepsy, as well as provide training, education and advocacy related to epilepsy for all Long Islanders.
With an estimated 35,000 individuals diagnosed with the condition in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, fundraisers like the Walk for Epilepsy help ensure that EPIC Long Island continues to be vital resource for making a positive impact in our communities. Stony Brook Epilepsy Center is also a vital resource to the community. Individuals who have persistent, recurrent seizures or those with an unconfirmed seizure diagnosis can benefit from the advanced services and technology that Stony Brook Epilepsy Center offers. This includes access to positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI), which is sometimes used to detect brain lesions that may not have been detected previously.
Seizures and epilepsy can involve and affect multiple body systems, and having a team of specialists that is readily available helps achieve more effective treatment plans. Our team includes renowned adult and pediatric epileptologists, neuropsychologists, radiologists, and neurosurgeons who are experts in the latest surgical techniques for epilepsy.
As part of an academic medical center, the Stony Brook Epilepsy Center also has access to research, including clinical trials of new treatments. Patients and their families also benefit from support and education services, which include a nurse practitioner and a support group that is co-run by a Stony Brook physician and a social worker from the Epilepsy Foundation.
