Stony Brook Once Again Awarded For Stroke Program Excellence by AHA/ASA
In a testament to the sustained excellence of its stroke program, Stony Brook University Hospital has been recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association with its Get With the Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite level award for 2019. It’s the
10thconsecutive year Stony Brook has received Gold Plus recognition, and the fourth year Stony Brook has achieved the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite level. The award reflects Stony Brook’s continuous commitment to quality and its ability to work as a team to successfully apply the most up-to-date, evidence-based treatment guidelines to improve patient care and outcomes for stroke.
To qualify for the Gold Plus recognition, a hospital must achieve an aggressive goal of treating patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standard levels of care as outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for two consecutive calendar years. In addition, a hospital receiving this recognition must have demonstrated 75 percent compliance to specific quality measures during a 12-month period.
To qualify for the additional Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite distinction, a hospital must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with a thrombolytic (clot-buster) therapy known as IV tPA, which is the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. A hospital with this distinction has achieved an average time to this thrombolytic therapy within 60 minutes in 75 percent or more of acute ischemic stroke patients treated with IV tPA.
